Is there any scientific proof to show hypnotherapy can help you stop smoking?

Stop smoking with hypnotherapy

These days, almost everyone knows that smoking is seriously bad for your health yet, despite these warnings, so many smokers find it impossible to kick the habit.

Why do they find it so hard?  Well, first of all, nicotine is highly addictive.  But that’s only one part of the problem, after all the physical cravings for cigarettes pass relatively quickly yet smokers have been known to return to their habit having given up successfully for months, or even years.

For these people, it’s not the physical cravings but rather the psychological ones that are preventing them from living a healthier, happier life.  Many smokers rely on willpower alone and, whilst some people manage to stop smoking this way it often only takes a wobble, or a highly stressful situation and, before they know it, they’re back on the road to addiction.

So, why do my hypnotherpay and Reiki sessions in Manchester help people to stop smoking?

Well, hypnotherapy focuses on your inner mind, the place where your innermost smoking related thoughts can be found.  During my hypnotherapy and Reiki sessions in Manchester I help you get into a calm, highly relaxed state and then use positive suggestions to entirely change the way you think and feel about smoking.

Often just one or two sessions are enough to completely erase your desire to smoke, all achieved with none of the nasty cravings associated with giving up the normal way.  Infact, stopping smoking via hypnotherapy isn’t ‘giving up’ at all.  That’s just a lie that our mind uses to  make us feel like we are denying ourselves something.

You’re not.

You’re making a positive choice to be happier, healthier, richer and more in control of your life.

But what do the scientists say?  Is there any really solid proof that all this works?

Well yes, there is.  In 2007 a study investigated the impact of giving hospitalised patients who smoked a single session of hypnotherapy to help them quit smoking.  Results showed that after 6 months, those who’d undergone hypnotherapy were more likely to have quit.

50% of patients who received hypnotherapy had quit at 6 months compared to 25% in the control group and 16% in the group given nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).  Patients who received both NRT and hypnotherapy also showed a 50% quit rate at 6 months.

The President of the American College of Chest Physicians, Alvin V Thomas, MD, FCCP, said:

“As physicians, we are constantly reviewing new approaches for smoking cessation and revisiting existing approaches to confirm their effectiveness.  The results of this study and many others confirm that using a multimodality approach to smoking cessation is optimal for success.”

Results were presented at Chest 2007, the 73rd annual international scientific assembly of the American College of Chest Physicians.
