The Most Incredible Moment. Hypnobirthing in Manchester: One woman’s story.

When Lucy and Irwin arrived at my group Easibirthing ® course in Didsbury in Autumn 2012, I instantly sensed their positivity towards birth. They had already decided on a water birth in the comfort of their own home and in addition had done a lot of research into what makes a good birth. Lucy also continued to use the gym well into her last trimester. Lucy had planned to use hypnobirthing as an essential part of her birth preparation and together with having an open-minded and thoroughly supportive partner, it was a recipe for success.

Easibirthing ® hypnosis for birth enabled Lucy and Irwin to learn how to deeply relax, eliminate their fears and to visualise a great birth. In addition they learned pain-relief methods. But the most important message that is put across on my course is to trust your body: it knows what to do. Although trusting the birth professionals around you is important, trust in your own body and its sensations is essential and Lucy and Irwin were taught to assert their own wishes to midwives: after all, it was their birth experience and once it was done they could never get it back. Here is Lucy’s story.

Aurelia’s birth story 8th December 2012

My due date arrived and I sat at home thinking will this be the day? Midnight arrives, no sign of baby so I decided to try and carry on as ‘normal’. We decided to take the plunge and go ahead with a house move we had been thinking about for a while. Another week goes by still no signs; I start to get fed up with people asking ‘have you not had that baby yet like it’s a choice!

On day 41+5 (Friday 7th December) we are offered an appointment at the hospital to monitor the baby and ensure everything is ok. After 30 minutes hooked up to the machine all appears well and I was offered a ‘sweep’. We take some time to discuss our options and agree to accept the offer, only to be told by the midwife that she is unable to complete the process as she can’t reach my cervix? We are offered a visit from the community midwives over the weekend to carry out a sweep and told we can return on Monday to be monitored again and offered an appointment with the consultant on Wednesday to discuss our options.

So we go home and ‘carry on’, later on that day I notice a few trickles of water and some sensations I can only liken to ‘period pains’ so I wonder if these are contractions and start monitoring them with my ‘contraction app’. By 10pm they seem quite frequent so I decide to go to bed and get some rest. I awake a few times in the night for a wee and notice some discomfort but it’s been fairly uncomfortable for the past few weeks so it’s nothing unusual. I wake up about 5.30 and try to doze but it’s no good so I get up at 6am and come down stairs to listen to my Easibirthing CD, which usually sends me back to sleep.

I head out early that morning with Liv. We left the house about 8.30am, on the way to Tarleton I notice that I’m still experiencing a few sensations but I’ve almost given up any hope of spontaneous labour so I put it to the back of my mind. The sensations continue and start to distract me so after an hour I head home. The sensations continue and start to increase in both intensity and frequency so I decide to call Irwin and ask him to get the birthing pool ready, I also head over to drop Olivia off at Caroline’s house.. By the time I reach Caroline’s I am finding it difficult to move, I leave Olivia with Caroline and head home thinking this is it!

By now it’s 1pm, I get home and the intensity of the contractions increase so I make a brew and head upstairs to try and prepare and focus on what is ahead. I can hear Irwin downstairs struggling with the birth pool preparations which increases my anxiety levels. There’s a knock on the door and Hilary* the community midwife appears as if by magic! Well coincidence really, she’s arrived to conduct the sweep, which is clearly no longer required! Hilary* takes over and she conducts an examination and advises that I’m already 2-3cms dilated and in established labour. After a few phone calls Hilary* advised that another midwife called Gita* would be attending for the birth, my heart sinks, after my previous encounter with Gita*, where I had experienced her as being rather abrupt and blunt I had told myself she was the last midwife I would want at my birth experience! Hilary* left and I went downstairs to get into the birth pool only to find we had run out of hot water, by this point I feel like crying, I probably did, but I got in anyway and attempted to submerge my body into the water, whilst Irwin continues filling the pool with saucepans and kettles full of hot water.

Gita* arrived and ‘told me’ I needed to get out of the pool so that she could examine me, fortunately at this point Irwin intervened and asked Gita* to go into the kitchen so that he could explain our birth plan. Fortunately, after this Gita* appeared more respectful of our wishes and agreed to carry out any monitoring in the pool. As my contractions increased in intensity I decided to ask for some gas and air and used this at the height of each contraction. I could feel the pressure building and this felt very intense and overwhelming at points, Gita* suggested I try to empty my bladder as this could help release some of the pressure and may encourage my waters to break. Well the ascent to the toilet worked and a few minutes later my waters broke and I quickly progressed to the transitional stage. I could feel the head starting to work its way down the birth canal, I began to feel the urge to push so I started to pant and avoided pushing when I knew my body was not ready. We quickly moved back downstairs and into the pool.

I managed the 2nd stage really well, I used the gas and air to manage the height of the sensations and refrained from pushing, which felt incredibly natural and strain free, there was no screaming or grunting and we delivered Aurelia as we hoped into a peaceful and calm environment. Irwin was in the pool and gently lifted Aurelia out of the water and placed her on my chest, Aurelia lay there peacefully and just took a few moments to adjust to her new surroundings, the lights were dim, we had the Hypnobirthing music playing in the background and we both just sat there cuddling Aurelia, it was the most incredible, surreal moment of my life, I felt so alert and aware of what was happening. I offered Aurelia my breast and we sat there in the pool, cuddled up for ten minutes undisturbed and asked the midwife to take some pictures. We decided against the vitamin K injection and asked for this to be administered orally the following day as we wanted Aurelia to remain undisturbed and peaceful after the birth experience. The midwife asked me to come out of the pool to deliver the placenta so we moved upstairs to the bedroom where I comfortably and naturally completed the 3rd stage and cut the cord after it had finished pulsating.

Aureilia giving Mum and Dad the Thumbs Up

After an hour of skin to skin contact the midwife carried out her checks and weighed Aureilia. I remained in bed to relax with Aureilia and Irwin went downstairs to move the birthing pool, after an hour or so I began to feel hungry so whilst continuing skin to skin contact I moved downstairs and we had some tea together and settled down to watch the X-Factor final, it all felt very surreal. I text Caroline to let her know the news, she kindly offered to keep Olivia overnight we allowed us some time to adjust and get some rest.  The following day Olivia came home to discover that she had a new sister and was very excited! Olivia and Aurelia exchanged presents, Olivia gave Aurelia a teddy with a blanket and Aurelia gave Olivia a Hello Kitty Hat with Mittens, both were very happy.

Normal life resumed fairly quickly, Irwin got on with his ironing, I popped down to Tesco to grab a few bits then we snuggled up and watched the film ‘Elf’.  The first few nights were challenging but we worked together taking it in turns and made a real effort to be considerate towards each other.

Well it’s Sunday, a week on and I feel amazing! I’d be lying if I said I’m not tired but I’ve probably had more sleep than most people and I’m feeling so happy at the moment with life that I really don’t care about the lack of sleep.

Five weeks on, all is well, we moved house a week ago, so we’re just settling into our new apartment. Aurelia comes to work with me every day in the sling and sleeps most of the time; she’s very content snuggled up close to mum. I feed on demand so other than her letting me know she needs a feed or changing, she very rarely cries. We have decided to co-sleep and so far so good, Aurelia feeds on the breast for a few hours in the evening then sleeps through till about 5/6am, I feed her in bed and then she sleeps again for another few hours which means I get plenty of sleep, probably more than I got when I was pregnant!

Most people say that we are Lucky that Aurelia is so content and sleeps so well, I don’t call it luck I call it preparation. I can’t say that there is one specific thing I can put it down to; However I believe the months of research and individual choices that we made for our birth plan, which include Hypnobirthing, viewing birth as a positive experience and closing our minds to negative birth stories certainly contributed.

Hypnobirthing in Manchester uses the easibirthing ® method of hypnosis for childbirth. A long-established proven method, easibirthing ® eliminates your fear of childbirth and increases your chances of a natural birth in which you remain relaxed, calm and able to manage any sensations. Plus, your baby will be calmer and your chances of efficient lactation will increase.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help Stammering?

Help for stammering in manchester

You may have heard that’s its ISAD (International Stammering Awareness Day) today, a very positive day to help PWS (people who stammer) feel supported and understood and those people who don’t stammer, to learn more about it.

Although the aim of this blog is to air my own thoughts and experiences on how can hypnotherapy help stammering, I would firstly like to let you know a little more about what stammering (also known as stuttering) actually is, how it develops and the potentially devastating effect it can have on a persons life.

How stammering starts

The best way I can describe stammering is through my own experience of it. I remember my first stammer very clearly. At 5 years of age, I was simply copying the tune from Batman (na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na BATMAN!) when my Dad said to me “Don’t stammer!” and I said “What’s stammer?”, after which he gave me his definition of it. In the same instance I then tried to say “Dad” which, to my surprise, came out as “Da-Da-Dad”. That’s where it all began for me, but of course stammering can start at any age, for any reason, or for no known reason at all.

How stammering develops

Being told not to stammer on several occasions was actually the perpetuating force behind the continuation of my stammer. Because when you are told not to do something you can’t help, you tense up when you are doing it. So when a word came along that I could not quite articulate, I thought it was wrong and I got nervous and worried and my mouth and throat (and the rest of my body) tensed up, making the stammer worse. This meant that what could have been just a simple sound repetition (b-b-ball) turned into a block, where my lips were held tense for several moments before the word “ball” burst out, if indeed it came out at all. Such a display of tension during speaking naturally led to lots of (unwanted) responses from listeners: people laughing, looking away, people interrupting trying to “help”, people putting the phone down. So I now knew that if I stammered I would get bad reactions and I thought, this is simple, I would simply not say the words I knew I would stammer on!

How stammering can affect your whole life

Everyone’s stammer is different. Some people stammer all the time and some cannot hide it, some people stammer only sometimes. Stammering can present itself as a word or sound repetition, a block, a sound prolongation, facial and bodily tension and tics.

For many people who stammer, especially adults, the some of words that they always stammer on are most often the words that are important, such as their own name, their children’s names, their address, their profession, the stop they need to ask for on the bus. This is simply because these are words that cannot be changed.

For example some words can be changed. In my case, if I knew I always stammered on the word “phone”, I could always avoid this word and substitute it in some way- “give me a ring” or “pass me the thingy so I can make a call”, so the word phone is not so “feared” as I could easily replace it. However, substituting your own name for another is ridiculous, so if I knew I would need to say my name, I would simply avoid the situation altogether (e.g. not go to a party) or if I could not avoid the situation (a visitor at work asks my name) I would suddenly develop a terrible cough that would require me to leave the room…after all a cough is far more acceptable and less shocking and shameful than stammering on your own name is it not?

So perhaps you can see how having a stammer can make you feel like you’re in an awful mess (it will be easier to walk 6 miles in the pouring rain than risk stammering to the bus driver) and it can lead to immense fear and anxiety of everyday situations (such as answering the phone or ordering a drink at the café) and also those big life decisions (shall I not do a PhD as I cant do meetings let alone a public talk- perhaps I will settle for a career in data entry where I don’t need to speak much).

Plus there is the added worry of being fluent sometimes and dysfluent at other times. Many people may not even know you have a stammer so you live in fear of stammering in front of them, because how strange would it be to go from talking normally to blocking on a simple word? What would they think?

So finally, how can hypnotherapy help stammering?

Firstly, I want to banish all false and ridiculous claims that hypnosis aims to cure stammering. Stammering has no known cure.

Hypnotherapy cannot cure stammering, but from my own experience, it can do the next best thing. Hypnosis to help stammering has the potential to change your life completely, so that stammering no longer negatively affects any aspect of your life whatsoever.

Hypnotherapy, when conducted by a caring and ethical professional has the potential to help PWS to totally accept their stammer, to truly realise that it is ok to stammer and to take all the fear, anger, embarrassment and shame out of stammering- feelings that may have built up over many years.  Hypnosis can complement conventional NHS or private speech therapy. Having worked on my own fears and anxieties about stammering I realised that the most powerful and long-lasting way I could use hypnotherapy to help stammering was through changing the way I felt about stammering itself, learning to subconsciously see stuttering as normal. When I started to see stammering as normal and not wrong, I stopped being scared of it. When I stopped being scared of it, I could say and do anything that I would do if I didn’t have a stammer (I don’t care if I stammer on every sound and syllable on a bus full of people, in fact I stammer with confidence, in a relaxed and controlled way and remain unaffected by unwanted reactions).

I was lucky enough to have completely reduced my anxiety over stuttering using hypnosis on myself, to such an extent that I no longer tensed up so much when I did stammer, leading to dramatically increased fluency (although this was of course not the primary aim of hypnotherapy, but rather a side effect!).

Hypnotherapy can work effectively on both adults and children to change your mind’s processing in a very safe and gentle way. It allows you to mentally rehearse all those feared situations in the safety of your own mind and above all, it can help you gain confidence and assertiveness and even as a person who stammers, to achieve the success in life that is rightfully yours.

So if you are considering hypnotherapy to help stammering, or would simply like more information, please contact me for a chat via email or ‘phone where we will begin to discuss your stammering and how hypnotherapy for stammering in Manchester can help you, in the way that you wish to help yourself.

Why pregnant women should try Reiki

Reiki for pregnancy in Manchester

Unlike some holistic treatments,  Reiki is a completely safe method of natural healing. So safe, that not only can it be used to enhance fertility and to improve the pregnancy experience, it is gentle enough to be targeted directly at the unborn baby.

But what can Reiki do for a pregnant woman and her baby?

From personal experience and the experience of many of the pregnant ladies I treat, the main outcome of a Reiki treatment is deep relaxation with a feeling of bliss and elation. The Reiki energy creates a feeling of wellness and in those expectant mothers who feel physically “weakened” by pregnancy, a sense of vigour is generated. Regular Reiki sessions during pregnancy, especially in the later stages can be highly beneficial in ensuring that fears about birth and motherhood are reduced so that the  natural maternal instincts emerge and develop strongly, resulting in calmness, confidence and positivity for the future.

For me, the biggest privilege of giving Reiki to pregnant women is the fact that when an expectant mother receives Reiki, this gentle, but powerful, energy is passed onto her developing baby. During the treatment, baby often responds with quietness and relaxation. The deep and loving connection between mother and baby can be developed in this way, greatly enhancing this incredible and miraculous pregnancy journey.

Reiki works well alone, and also perfectly complements Hypnobirthing.

If you are thinking of trying Reiki and have more questions or would like to book a treatment contact me for more information.

Hypnosis: Instinctive and Healing

Hypnosis is a natural phenomenon that both humans and animals induce and experience.
In fact, Shikar (hunting) books are full of narratives wherein the hunted animals are paralyzed with fear:

“The leopard stalked the chital on silken paws. The herd fled, except for a sub-adult who stood transfixed. As their eyes met, the chital froze. It was hypnotized with fear. Within seconds, the leopard sank its teeth into her jugular. In her anaesthetized state, the chital felt nothing. Death in a trance was painless”..

As for human beings, the earliest records of hypnosis date back to ancientEgypt. Such scripts and pictures depict the use of “sleep temples”.  Sleep temples were used for healing of the body, as well as for resolving emotional troubles.  A person visiting the sleep temple would be “put to sleep” by a high priest with the intent of being fully healed upon awakening.  Upon awakening the person would receive the equivalent of a post-hypnotic suggestion and many times experience complete healing [WCTI, 1994].

The ancient Greeks too used hypnosis to cure their sick and Seers at the Greek oracle of Delphiused self-hypnosis.

InIndia, too, yogis and rishis utilized self-hypnosis during meditation to still their minds. The Indian equivalent of hypnosis is sammohan. Says Dr Ramesh Paramahamsa, head ofDelhi’sInstitute of Psychic and Spiritual Research:

“Sammohan shakti has been practised inIndiasince Vedic times. It can be defined as the power of attraction. Sammohan is inborn in every human being. Even while I talk to you, there is a kind of hypnosis where I try to attract and hold your attention, planting subtle suggestions. No yoga and meditation is possible without self-hypnosis. They are inseparable.”

As my hypnobirthing in Manchester clients already know, words can be very powerful in inducing positive states of mind. So I have selected some quotes to keep you inspired for your natural birth!

The truth for women living in a modern world is that they must take increasing responsibility for the skills they bring into birth if they want their birth to be normal. Making choices of where and with whom to birth is not the same as bringing knowledge and skills into your birth regardless of where and with whom you birth.

I have been taught where women are free, we will learn how they give birth best. They will show us. They will trust us. Look at them and listen closely.

Dr. Michael Odent – Obstetrician

The more births I attend, the more I realise how much we disturb the birthing woman.

Gloria Lemay – Birth Attendant

The parallels between making love and giving birth are clear, not only in terms of passion and love, but also because we need essentially the same conditions for both experiences: privacy and safety.

Dr. Sarah Buckley

If we are to heal the earth, we must begin by healing birth.

Agnes Sallet Von Tannenberg

Fear can be overcome by faith.

Dr. Grantly Dick-Read – Childbirth Without Fear

Your Childbirth, Your Responsibility, Your Success

What do you think your role is in the birth of your baby? Often in childbirth we are advised to rely on someone else for the delivery- the doctors, obstetricians, midwives and doulas.  Many people avoid the thought of childbirth, because they suppose that their responsibility is only to select the hospital or birth centre.

In actual fact, the responsibility for childbirth belongs to the mother and father to be. The parents are the ones who bear the consequences. When it is not clear who is responsible, then in effect no one is responsible, and complications can happen.

When everyone assumes that childbirth is someone else’s responsibility, it might turn into disaster. On the other hand, when everyone assumes full responsibility, the result is the most successful childbirth.

Responsibility creates the possibility for easy and empowering childbirth. Though others may also have  a responsibility, that’s no reason to reduce your own level of responsibility. When everyone makes the commitment to be fully present, giving, open and responsible, a truly wonderful birth can happen.

The most effective powerful kind of responsibility is full responsibility.

When you take on this kind of responsibility, you create the opportunity to experience the power of the natural flow of birth; you will be able to flow through any challenges and will be much more resilient. Whatever your particular situation, choose to take full responsibility for giving birth and you will experience the power of creation.

How can hypnotherapy help? Hypnosis can remove the mental obstructions to an easy birth, enabling to you fully trust your body. It is only once you have trust that your body knows what to do and trust that your mind can deal with anything, that you are able to take control and full responsibility for the successful birth of your baby.

Hypnobirthing in Manchester uses the easibirthing ® method of hypnosis for childbirth. Can Reiki Change Your Life?

I was first introduced to Reiki when I experienced my first treatment about ten years ago and it was the most relaxing and inspiring and experience of my life. Since that very first treatment (and I believe, as a result of that treatment), amazing things happened in my life. In fact I was so blown away by the experience  that within 3 years I had become a Reiki Master myself. I have seen amazing changes in people that have come to me for Reiki treatments but it’s the changes within myself that amaze me the most. My attitude towards life itself has become so positive and Reiki gives me an inner strength and confidence that I never knew I had-  I find that I can cope with the challenges and knockbacks that life throws at me that previously I struggled to deal with. Reiki changes your life and it has been in my experience that it changes lives for the better.

More about Reiki

Reiki pronounced ‘ray-key’, is a complementary healing therapy, founded by Mikao Usui in Japan, in the early part of the the 20th century.  Reiki,  is a gentle and effective system of hands-on or distance healing which activates the body’s own natural ability to heal itself.  As a natural healing system, it can benefit everyone, from young babies to adults and is a safe, non-invasive treatment.

Reiki is taught by practitioners who have been attuned, a procedure which prepares them so that they may be an open channel for the energy by an individual who is a  Reiki Master.  These ancient Reiki initiations open the door to grace and a deepening connection with both self and spirit.  They offer the gift of light.  It has been said that Reiki is like a very powerful light that fills each person illuminating the darkness within.

The energy of Reiki is so powerful that it inspires awe and yet it is so gentle that it feels like unconditional love.
Reiki works from deep within, balancing your personal energy so that emotional problems from nervousness to depression can be helped. Reiki helps to replenish your vital energy and strengthen the immune system. At the same time Reiki helps with both acute and chronic illnesses by reducing and relieving stress. It is ideal for promoting fertility and remaining balanced throughout pregnancy. Any one can receive Reiki to improve their life; you don’t necessarily need to be “unwell”.

So how can you make sure you achieve what you want in 2012?

It is at this time of year we all make very big promises to ourselves to change in some way for the better. Perhaps we need to become calmer, more organised, more confident, lose weight, change our career path or overcome our fears. Whatever our wishes, we start with good intentions but more often than not, our emotions, our beliefs, our “programming” gets the best of us. Why is that? Well part of the reason is old belief systems, habits and comfort zones get in our way. If you truly want to make those resolutions reality, it takes more than just deciding to do it. It takes reprogramming your subconscious (hard drive) to function exactly as you wish it to function. Is that hard? Yes and no.

Let’s first look at the process (get a pen and paper!)

1.      Analyse why you want that resolution to exist in the first place. Make certain it is your resolution and not one someone else tells you should to be.

2.      List all the reasons this resolution is the right resolution and the right one for you.

3.      Ask yourself, is it logical? Does it fit with your life in a way to be productive or will this particular resolution cause such chaos that you lose your will to follow through?

4.      Any change needs will power. If you lack will power you need to find out why you do. Once you know why (usually a habit or belief) it might be necessary to change that first.

So now you have decided to make the change, you analysed and now understand the why, you have all the right reasons, you have the will power, it’s logical. So the second step is the big one…do it.

Hypnotherapy helps your subconscious mind (hard drive), where you have all those habits and beliefs systems stored, to work in unison with your conscious desire to change or control situations.

If you are stuck or too fearful to live up to your own resolutions and can’t, seek the help. You can make it happen with the caring and expert help of a professional hypnotherapist.

If you are thinking of investing in ensuring that achieve your goals in 2012, contact me for more information or to arrange your free consultation so we can talk through your worries and make a plan that best suits you.

Hypnotherapy for stress manchester
Overcome Stress with Hypnosis

How many times a day do you feel stressed? Are you even aware of what is happening in your body when you are stressed? Imagine yourself now in one of those many challenging situations-picture your responses:  perhaps your heart rate increases, your breathing becomes short and shallow, you may actually “feel anger” rising up as your muscles are tensing, your throat constricting, or perhaps you shout out in rage.

You may already know that this response to difficulties in our life is actually an instinctive response known as the “fight/flight/fright” response. We respond to the difficulty by releasing stress hormones which flood our blood. In our primitive days, such a response was useful, in fact it was more than useful, it was essential for our survival. When we saw a threat such as a tiger, or a competitor, the stress hormones released into our blood, caused our muscles to tense up and our heart rate to increase, in preparation to fight or to run away and the act of fighting or running “used up” the stress hormone so our body returned to normal.

Of course, our challenges in this day and age are rarely wild animals! Instead we respond to everyday situations such as difficulties at work or with the kids as if they were a threat to our survival, and the stress hormones kick in- and are often useless in dealing without challenge.  In addition, as we do not actually run away from these situations, the hormones are not used up and our body does not go back to being normal. The more this response is elicited, the more the hormone builds up, leading to a chronic state of stress- so common in today’s society.

I probably don’t need to remind you that increased levels of stress hormone have short-term negative effects such as headaches, IBS, disturbed sleep and depression. However, did you know that stress can be responsible for more serious effects such as:

  • Impaired cognitive performance
  • Suppressed thyroid function
  • Blood sugar imbalances such as hyperglycemia
  • Decreased bone density
  • Decrease in muscle tissue
  • Higher blood pressure
  • Lowered immunity and inflammatory responses in the body, slowed wound healing, and other health consequences
  • Increased abdominal fat associated with being overweight and at increased risk of heart attacks and strokes

So, why do my hypnosis for stress sessions Manchester help people overcome a chronic state of stress? Because stress responses are so instinctive, stress management strategies must be developed at a deep level of mental awareness, under hypnosis. We need to train our mind to respond in the most appropriate and useful way- and also for this new response to become second nature to us. This means “undoing” years of programmed reactions and creating new, healthier programmes within our subconscious. The Reiki element of the therapy enables complete balancing on a deep energetic level, as well as ensuring your body is wonderfully relaxed.

The result? A more relaxed you, able to respond to everyday situations with calmness, control and mental clarity.
